”Dr. Nielsen is an established scholar related to educational policy as well as interfaith understanding. His professional experience in postsecondary education and his depth of knowledge about research methods as well as higher education scholarship allows him to offer significant nuance and depth. He is wonderful and exciting speaker and someone I often consult with in regards to discussions about higher education.
”Dr. Nielsen is an accomplished practitioner-scholar. I served with Dr. Nielsen on the Student Affairs on Campus (SAoC) Editorial Board beginning Fall 2021. Collaborating with Dr. Nielsen has been a pleasure as he skillfully balances the stages of each new project and applies his diverse skillsets to needed tasks. For example, Dr. Nielsen has been instrumental in “re-launching” the SAoC journal, ideating about and articulating its purpose, audience, structure, and procedures. In addition to the knowledge of research, writing, and publication that Dr. Nielsen used to review manuscripts, he used technical skills to improve the journal website improve the review communication process. Dr. Nielsen’s diverse experience allows him to have a unique perspective and serve as a key resource toward religious equity and social justice. He remains aware of his own privileges while advocating for minoritized persons and systemic inequities. Moreover, Dr. Nielsen is collegial. Throughout my interactions with Dr. Nielsen, he has exemplified congruence between his research and his personal interactions with others –congruence one would hope for and expect from a student affairs professional and a religious, secular, and spiritual equity scholar.

He specializes in enhancing institutional climates for religious, secular, and spiritual identities through policy and practice. I've had the privilege of working with Dr. Nielsen over the past 4 years and observed his critical thinking capacity for developing partnerships across differences with the purpose of improving experiences for minoritized and marginalized community members at the local and state level. His efforts for advancing pluralism have proven results in legislatures and campus communities across the US. Further, his analytical skills evidenced in his research highlight how institutions might best scale efforts for inclusive excellence.
